Although the Nazi leader was not known to practice the physical exercises associated with yoga, he was fascinated with the Bhagavad Gita, the 700-verse Hindu scripture that outlines the principles of yoga and karma, and had a German translation of the Sanskrit original always at his side.

But far from embracing the hippy-style attitudes of peace and love so often associated with the scripture, Himmler, who helped orchestrate the Holocaust, connected it with his desire for racial purity and the justification of killing to achieve this.

“He identified himself and the SS with the old Indian Kshatriya caste and its publicised attitude of unscrupulous killing for one's 'higher purpose',” writes Mathias Tietke, in his new book “Yoga in National Socialism”, which is published this week.

Himmler was not alone amongst the Nazis in possessing a fondness for yoga, and believing it could help fortify Germans for the trials of waging war.

SS Captain Jakob Wilhelm Hauer apparently managed to convince the SS commander that “yoga can internally arm us and prepare us for the battles ahead”.

DAYTONA BEACH — A Spring Hill woman wasn't in the courtroom this afternoon when she was convicted of kidnapping her grandson from his temporary guardian's home in Port Orange.

A jury took almost two hours of deliberating to find Laurine Sue Arnold, 50, guilty as charged of taking the 5-year-old boy from the bedroom of the home where he lived, under the temporary custody of Arnold's sister. The boy, who had been dressed like a girl, was found in a Hare Krishna temple in Alachua.

“She had no authority to take this child,” prosecutor Mike Willard said in his closing argument.

Arnold, who considers herself a “sovereign citizen,” had been out on bail since December. She was in court earlier in the week for jury selection but didn't show up for the trial yesterday or today. After the verdict was announced, Circuit Judge J. David Walsh revoked her bail and issued a warrant for her arrest.

Prosecutors presented witnesses who described how Arnold took the child — staying with Arnold's sister Debra Mae Larubbio — on Aug. 24.

Michigan child welfare authorities, through Florida's Department of Children & Families, had given Larubbio temporary custody of the boy. But according to court records, the child was going to be taken back to Michigan to be adopted.

Attorney Kathleen McNeilly argued on Arnold's behalf that the child was taken with Larubbio's “implicit consent.” She based that argument on the fact that the legal guardian, Larubbio, left two doors unlocked, even though Larrubbio reported the child missing to law enforcement.

“The doors were left unlocked,” McNeilly argued, “at a time when Larubbio told Michigan she could not adopt the child and Michigan insisted on adoption.”

Questioned by prosecutors, Larubbio said the doors were always unlocked. She testified that she was willing to raise the child as a relative caregiver.

Now that Arnold was convicted, she faces up to life in prison.

The case has been filled with twists and turns, including pro-se filings by Arnold trying to stop what she called “fraudulent” proceedings.

In court documents, Arnold refers to herself as “Freeman Laurine Sue of the Family Arnold.”

The “sovereign citizen” movement is a loosely organized collection of groups and individuals who have adopted a right-wing anarchist ideology. Its adherents believe that virtually all existing government in the United States is illegitimate, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

On the renovated 13th floor of an imposing government building sits Clocktower Gallery, wedged on Leonard street somewhere between Tribeca, City Hall and Chinatown; on Tuesday, Feb. 21 Taraka Larson presented there a lecture on the formation of Now Age aesthetics and their implications for Ghost Modernism–an examination of the Symbol's loss of power and it's occult move to kitsch, all within an architecture of Utopia. Later, small-scale media publisher Jesse Hlebo of Swill Children joined aesthetic theorist and musician Hunter Hunt Hendrix of Liturgy with Columbia professor Jon Kessler for discussion on the state of the Culture industry.

    Hang in there.

To catch you up: Larson is one half of sister-duo Prince Rama, a Brooklyn-based band storied as much for their rearing on a Hare Krishna tract somewhere in Florida as their live shows of ritual and the borderline occult. Prince Rama is a band with some pretty heavy clout in the Brooklyn underground, having played most serious venues in the DIY Wave. They'll run an “exercise” Thursday, Feb. 23 at Glasslands; they've pummeled 285 Kent; they released an album, literally, into the sky with balloons, from the roof of The Market Hotel. And they ran a residency on the apocalypse at Issue Project Room. They've toured the world with their beat-heavy mantra-song and toed the line of style and substance that seems to be the idiom of the moment. It's surprised me that the sisters (Taraka with Nimai) haven't wound up on the cover of Fader by now, what with their intricate styling, ornate around a pulsating zeitgeist.

    Like us on Facebook

Nimai joined Taraka onstage as part of her lecture on the Now Age, though there was none of the meditative song the two create together. Instead, Nimai played slight percussion and was one of about ten dancers who appeared in a maddening, glittered group of spritely females intended to provoke the crowd. At their best, they incited a mosh-pit during Taraka's Black Sabbath air-guitar-with-a-guitar karaoke thrash jam; at their most intrusive, they pulled the stoned from their seats. But this exercise helped underscore a point Larson made relating art space to concert space–it was an iteration of liberty for people to thrash like that for so long in a gallery.

The lecture as a whole John Cage would have been hard pressed to follow. A mix of multimedia, music, discussion, concert, spectacle, dance, pop, blood, and Mylar echoed around Clocktower's expansive back room. The presentation was modeled after Larson's concise Swill Children publication and each heading functioned as the separation of an act. That compartmentalization of the moment sought to explore the difference between past and future time, eradicating notions of “new” or “different” through embracing performance as The Record. It was Ad Hoc by just a few days, Larson told me later, but came across as polished and surprising and gripping altogether.

In the theory, Larson became more forcefully New Left than she'd previously professed her loyalties to me. Notions of the work's aura and the formation of style as critical arc echoed Walter Benjamin and Adorno with Horkheimer at their most irritated. But Larson's most interesting contentions were on the confluence of unlimited access to nostalgia as a shield of deference. In finality Larson makes a case of unrestricted cultural-temporal access to signifiers of any era at any time-the Internet. Her intentions of aligning the spiritual with the rational, heretofore quite public, had not yet reached so far into an actualized metaphysical space. Larson even sought to prove the delineation of spirituality that came to divide and reunify in 2011 as representative in the symbols of the Cross and the Triangle, both of which moved to kitsch from occult in 2011. Her illustration and resurrection of the symbols became finite when she pulled Hlebo and Hendrix from the crowd, made them stand shirtless, and explained the theoretical power of both forms, painted on the models.

A lot of Larson's notions came off as somewhat…obvious? That can't be the right word because the obvious doesn't bread the kind of spectacle and joy that occurred at Clocktower Tuesday. More so, what we're witnessing is the destruction of style as “the aesthetic equivalent of domination” (Adorno & Horkheimer). The collision of these worlds that Hlebo and Hendrix represent, with Larson edging them together, speaks to a moment where a lack of style as combat allows community across structural, technological, and critical lines. Larson's given us an argument of metastasis, the kind of discussion of a discussion that must happen if we're to reform the state of the culture industry. Further, we're seeing similar notions of sampling, albeit on not such an ephemeral level, in the theoretical mainstream-Jaron Lanier is the easiest reference point, particularly his book-length rant “You Are Not A Gadget.” However, Larson's contention is that, while gadgets we are not, gadgets may assist us to be in identity.

Before I found my way to Clocktower Tuesday, I wrote to a friend: “I think I'm going to an event that will be very important in the formation of the second-wave psychedelic.” She laughed at me. But I'm taking this entire discussion very seriously because other people are too. When we're actually able to do things like this and merge so many creative worlds into space, metaphysical and physical–that is the art. That is the post-digital empiricism we've lacked in blog culture. That is community. That is trust.

The notion of the Record came to bare when, after a treatise on the death of the moment, Taraka killed herself off in a flash of blood. Well, corn syrup probably. And Nimai was the one that stabbed her, with the back end of a Tympani mallet. They both wore white gowns and the blood caked on Taraka's face clashed against her emerald eyes, fierce and desperate. She passed on the floor next to a looping wooden vinyl player, having literally killed the moment and underlined Feb. 21 as the night of Now Age Record.

This is how it all made sense: We are always Now.

London, Feb 22 (ANI): Nazi paramilitary organisation Schutzstaffel (S.S) overlord, Heinrich Himmler, was fascinated with the ancient discipline of yoga, a historian has revealed in a new book.

A German historian has discovered how the SS in Nazi Germany recommended its members, including death camp guards, to practice yoga to enrich their “mind, bodies and spirits”.

The first ever book probing the Third Reich's fascination with the ancient discipline intended to attain “perfect spiritual insight and tranquillity”, was published this week, entitled 'Yoga In National Socialism' by historian and yoga expert Mathias Tietke.

It shows how Reichsfuhrer of the S.S was fascinated with the discipline and perverted it and its ancient roots into a philosophy to justify the Holocaust.

“Whoever thinks about yoga thinks of people sitting in the lotus position, greeting the sun in order to reduce the stress of everyday life,” the Daily Mail quoted the author as saying.

“It is associated with mental equilibrium, the search for wisdom and inner peace and is not considered to be about force or persecution. Nevertheless, there is also this side to the history of yoga,” Tietke said.

Tietke ploughed through thousands of Third Reich documents to chronicle the history of this most peaceful of pursuits in the time of the savagery of Nazism.

The Nazi interest in yoga lay in its roots in the 19th century when India mysticism was a favourite pursuit of the middle and upper classes and a great influence on romantic poets and philosophers.

During the Wiemar Republic, as the Nazis gained strength, yoga enjoyed a boom among a people weary of war, inflation, unemployment and misery.

More than 50 yoga books were published in the 1920's in Berlin alone. And, as the Nazis corrupted most things they touched, so it was with yoga.

It was seized on by race experts in the party as being the pursuit of 'Ayran' people. Jakob Wilhelm Hauer, an S.S. captain and yoga expert, who influenced his chief Himmler and convinced him that “yoga can internally arm us and prepare us for the forthcoming battles.”

In 1937, four years after the Nazis attained power, the country's first yoga centre opened up in Berlin and operated until it was destroyed by Allied bombs in 1943.

The teacher who ran it had disciples in 50 German towns and cities. Himmler, obsessed as he was with hocus-pocus race theories and mysticism relating to his S.S. “supermen”, carried around a German copy of the Bhagavad Gita with him wherever he went.

He regarded the ancient Sanskrit epic as being a blueprint for cruelty and terror, using it, said Tietke, to ultimately justify the Holocaust.

“He identified himself and the SS with the old Indian Kshatriya caste and its publicised attitude of unscrupulous killing for one's 'higher purpose',” Tietke said.

Tietke also said that Himmler's attitude to “karma” was never better displayed than at the secret speech he made to senior S.S. men at Poznan in 1943 when he spoke of the noble, virtuous work his butchers were performing in eliminating the Jews of Europe and Russia.

Himmler was also interested in other early Indian religious writings of India, including the Rigveda, which contains the mythology of the Hindu gods.

“These celebrated the racism of the Aryan immigrating from central Asia to India, killing and a driving out designated 'inferior' opponents,” Tietke added. (ANI)

DAYTONA BEACH — Although she wasn't in the courtroom, the trial of a woman accused of kidnapping her grandson from his temporary guardian's home began Tuesday.

Laurine Sue Arnold, 50, of Spring Hill, is accused of snatching the 5-year-old boy from the bedroom of his temporary guardian's house in Port Orange. The boy, who had been dressed like a girl, was found in a Hare Krishna temple in Alachua.

Arnold's attorney Kathleen McNeilly is presenting a defense that Larubbio didn't commit kidnapping, but was against the adoption and just wanted to see the child.

The case has already taken some strange twists. Arnold, who claims to be part of the “sovereign citizen movement,” according to her lawyer, and is out on bail, was present for jury selection on Monday. But she did not show up for her trial Tuesday.

Although she is represented by McNeilly, Arnold has filed her own rambling motions, questioning the jurisdiction of the court and citing “common law.”

Circuit Judge J. David Walsh, who is presiding over the jury trial, said the trial could go on without Arnold in the courtroom. McNeilly said the rules require that a person be present for the selection of a jury, but not for the trial. Arnold is out of jail on $55,000 bail.

Closing arguments will begin first thing this morning.

If convicted of kidnapping, she faces up to 30 years in prison.

The “sovereign citizen” movement is a loosely organized collection of groups and individuals who have adopted a right-wing anarchist ideology. Its adherents believe that virtually all existing government in the United States is illegitimate, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Venkata Appala Chari translates the holy book into Urdu

In mundane imagination, a book titled ‘Naghme Ilahi' will perhaps invoke the image of classical Sufi saints in ecstasy of God's praise. But hardly does it occur to even the most devout Hindus that the title literally translates into ‘Bhagavad Gita'!

If this Urdu translation of the hymn from Hindu mythology raises many eyebrows, the translator S.T. Venkata Appala Chari, who achieved this task at 74 surprises many more. Now 83, Mr. Chari, who retired as the Statistical Officer in the Education Department long ago, claims that his is the most authentic Urdu translation of the hymn. “I finished the work in one year, and got it published in 2003. In 18 chapters, it contains the translation of the meanings of 700 slokas,” said Mr.Chari.

The job was not as simple as said. Effort to script the slokas in Urdu failed due to many differences between the languages in terms of pronunciation. Barriers were encountered in translating a few words such as ‘Parashakthi' and ‘Paramapadam', and in explaining the relevance of a few mythological characters. These were effectively addressed by providing a glossary. “During Mughal period, the Bhagavad Gita was translated into Persian tongue. There have been a few recent Urdu translations too, but not very meaningful ones. I am satisfied that my translation is faithful to the original,” Mr. Chari says.

The Nawabi tongue came more naturally to Mr.Chari than either Telugu or Sanskrit, as he had studied up to graduation with Urdu as language medium.

“I owe my penchant for and knowledge of Urdu to my high school teacher, Khadar Husain Khan, who would call me ‘111' referring to my Vaishnavite symbols,” he recalled fondly.

The octogenarian is now busy working on the manuscript of a 50-year-old Telugu-Urdu dictionary.

Feb. 21 (Bloomberg) — London restaurant prices are among the highest in the world, yet you don’t always have to spend a lot to eat well, even in the center of the city.

I asked almost 50 chefs and restaurateurs where they go for cheap eats. Here’s what they had to say:

Tom Aikens (Tom Aikens): “Polpo. Russell Norman is so clever: He has created a handful of restaurants that are so spot-on for the times, and his food concepts are so simple but they work. Fun, urban, relaxed, inexpensive.”

Joel Antunes (Kitchen Joel Antunes): “Les Deux Salons. Anthony Demetre’s cooking is outstanding and I think that their set lunch menu at 15.95 pounds ($25.18) for three courses is a phenomenal bargain.”

Jason Atherton (Pollen Street Social): “Meatliquor. Yiannis Papoutsis has mastered the art of the perfect burger. I’m so glad the Meatwagon has found a permanent residence in central London.”

Pascal Aussignac (Cigalon): “Busaba Eathai is still best.”

Sat Bains (Restaurant Sat Bains, Nottingham): “Bar Boulud is a great relaxed restaurant where you can grab a brilliant burger, charcuterie or a lavish slap up: Hits all the spots and great drinks.”

Claude Bosi (Hibiscus): “Mien Tay, in Battersea.”

    Daniel Boulud (Bar Boulud): “Ottolenghi.”

Sally Clarke (Clarke’s): “Lucky Seven on Westbourne Park Road, Notting Hill, for a great hamburger. I go with my son straight out of school, and it’s a treat for both of us.”

Anthony Demetre (Les Deux Salons): “Bocca Di Lupo is my top favorite for a relatively cheap meal. That’s closely followed by Kitchen Joel Antunes. He’s London’s unsung hero.”

Chris Galvin (Galvin Bistrot de Luxe): “28-50 in Fetter Lane (the Texture boys) or the Delaunay.”

Alexis Gauthier (Gauthier Soho): “Cay Tre, Soho. It’s really local to me and therefore an ideal place to eat between lunch and dinner service. The food is delicious, good value and they also care about the ingredients.”

    Brett Graham (The Ledbury): “Koya.”

Trevor Gulliver (St John Bread & Wine): “Chez Marcelle. Kinda slow because Marcelle cooks everything herself and very much in her own time.”

Des Gunewardena (Kensington Place/D&D London): “Princi. If I have morning meetings in Soho I always drop in for a brioche and a double-shot cappuccino.”

Skye Gyngell (ex-Petersham Nurseries): “Spuntino or Polpo or any of those little hole-in-the-wall places of Russell Norman. Also, Maltby Street on Saturday mornings. It’s an incredibly lovely little market.”

Anna Hansen (Modern Pantry): “The Corner Room.”

Sam Harris (Zucca): “Jose, on Bermondsey Street. I often drop in to see Jose for a quick bite to eat between services.”

Sam Hart (Barrafina): “Koya serves only foot-trodden udon noodles in a variety of combinations that are never less than fabulous. At 7 pounds to 10 pounds for a huge bowl, this is seriously good value.”

Angela Hartnett (Murano): “Byron. They do great burgers, and it’s quick service. Fish House is a good fish-and-chip shop near Victoria Park. It’s easy, old-style fish and chips.”

Mark Hix (Hix Belgravia): “Hung’s, on Wardour Street, is a place I often go. They do a good tripe in special sauce. Koya on Frith Street is good, too.”

Jacob Kenedy (Bocca Di Lupo): “Pitt Cue Co, Royal China (dim sum at lunchtime), Mooli’s, Koya, Hot Stuff.”

Tom Kitchin (Kitchin, Edinburgh): “Polpo is good. I love the informality, the happiness. I’m planning a visit to Terroirs next.”

Pierre Koffmann (Koffmann’s): “L’Absinthe. It’s a simple bistro but the food is good and the prices are low for food and wine.”

Atul Kochhar (Benares): “Dishoom, near Leicester Square.”

Adam Perry Lang (Barbecoa): “Applebee’s Fish at Borough market, the prawn wrap. I can eat even when I have just finished a meal.”

Jeremy Lee (Quo Vadis): “Brawn. A glass of something delicious and a few wee plates at Brawn never fails to please.”

Rowley Leigh (Le Cafe Anglais): “I eat in the Chinese restaurants in Queensway occasionally. Dim sum at the Royal China at lunch and roast pork and spectacular rude waiters at the Four Seasons and Kam Tong.”

Bruno Loubet (Bistrot Bruno Loubet): “Exmouth Market is a great destination for a variety of world cuisines at a good price. I can choose between a Jamaican curry, Ghanaian street food or a buckwheat galette, all for around 6 pounds.”

Francesco Mazzei (L’Anima): “Yildiz, on Blackstock Road. It’s a Turkish barbecue place and one of the few that does lamb breast. It’s good meat and bread.”

Nuno Mendes (Viajante): “Koya, Yum Bun on Broadway Market, Lucky Chip burgers, Rochelle Canteen and Big Apple Hot Dogs.”

David Moore (L’Autre Pied): “Yalla Yalla. In the heart of Soho, it’s a little corner of Beirut, with authentic street food in a cramped but hugely atmospheric setting. You must try the sauteed chicken liver with garlic and pomegranate molasses.”

Russell Norman (Mishkin’s): “Morito, in Clerkenwell, or Govinda’s, in the Hare Krishna Temple in Soho Street.”

Jamie Oliver (Union Jacks): “Chipotle, on Baker Street, or this great hot-dog place, Big Apple Hot Dogs, on Old Street.”

Ashley Palmer-Watts (Dinner by Heston Blumenthal): “Les Deux Salons. I wouldn’t exactly call it cheap eats: It’s just incredibly hard to beat the place for value.”

Stevie Parle (Dock Kitchen): “Railroad, in Hackney, or Tayyabs.”

Gary Rhodes (Rhodes Twenty Four): “Princi in Soho. It’s simple, but with great savory and sweet bites.”

Simon Rogan (Roganic): “Meatliquor. It’s the talk of the town right now, is cheap, great fun and the burgers are excellent. I like the Bohemian feel of it, all a bit off the wall, and I love the corn dogs.”

Michel Roux Jr. (Le Gavroche): “Soif, in Clapham. I live around the corner and it’s excellent value, good food. The head chef (Colin Westal) used to work for me so it has to be good.”

Silvena Rowe (Quince): “Brawn. It’s the place I take all my U.S. visitors.”

Mark Sargeant (Rocksalt): “Canteen. It’s a real slice of British tradition in a smart, modern environment. They source the best possible produce and it’s great value for money.”

Leonid Shutov (Bob Bob Ricard): “Burger & Lobster is phenomenal. I love it. I also like Goodman. It’s not cheap but it’s casual and informal, and the steak is fantastic.”

Rick Stein (Seafood Restaurant, Padstow): “Tayyabs, a Pakistani restaurant in the East End. The saag lamb — lamb and spinach leaves, with garam masala, chili, garlic and ginger –is excellent.”

Agnar Sverrisson (Texture): “Busaba Eathai. I love the flavors and spices, and the food is fantastic value for money.”

Ben Tish (Opera Tavern): “Tayyabs. The food is cheap, consistently good, and although the service can be a little shaky at times, it’s all part of its noisy charm.”

Clive Watson (Village East): “Zucca, our neighbor on Bermondsey Street. It’s reliable, memorable and no fuss. A bowl of Sam Harris’s pasta and a glass of Lugana Superiore is as good as cheap eats with a seat gets in my little black book.”

Mickael Weiss (Coq d’Argent): “Franco Manca serves the best pizza in London and the queue goes down much more quickly than you think it will. One of the capital’s hidden gems.”

Alyn Williams (Alyn Williams at the Westbury): “Burger & Lobster in Clarges Street. Twenty pounds for one of London’s best burgers or an awesome lobster roll with chips is hard to beat. Otherwise, I head to Chinatown for dim sum.”

New Delhi, Feb. 20: The Supreme Court will next week hear a case concerning two feuding branches of Iskcon, several of whose monks are nowadays seen chanting “Hare Krishna” in the court’s corridors.

The ochre-clad monks, heads shaved but for a tuft, are caught in a long battle of branch supremacy. The feuding sides are the Mumbai and Bangalore branches of Iskcon, the full name for which is the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

The Mumbai branch at Juhu was the first society registered under the Iskcon name in 1971. The rival Bangalore branch was established in 1978.

The Bangalore monks have long claimed that the Mumbai branch wanted to control all Iskcon centres and properties in the country. According to the Bangalore society, now worth Rs 39 crore, Iskcon founder Srila Prabhupada had wished that all branches should run as parallel, autonomous units. The Mumbai society was working against the wishes of the deceased founder.

Prabhupada had specifically stated that he did not want a spiritual heir. Instead a group of 12 members, known as the governing body commission (GBC), would loosely oversee Iskcon’s functioning, sources in the Bangalore branch said. In Prabhupada’s lifetime, new branches and temples were opened with the consent of the GBC.

After Prabhupada’s mahasamadhi on November 14, 1977, the GBC, based in the Mumbai centre, took over the responsibility of guiding the Hare Krishna movement.

According to sources in Bangalore Iskcon, a culture clash also played a part in the feud. Bangalore Iskcon felt the Mumbai unit had been taken over by Americans. Bangalore, the sources said, had many more Indian believers.

In 2001, the Bangalore unit moved a civil court seeking to restrain Mumbai from interfering in its temple administration. The case was decreed in favour of Bangalore Iskcon in April 2009 and it got the right to operate the temple independent of Mumbai Iskcon.

But Karnataka High Court reversed the order on May 23, 2011. The Bangalore branch then went to the Supreme Court. In an interim order passed on July 5, 2011, the top court allowed Bangalore Iskcon to operate its temple but restrained its office bearers from taking any policy decisions.

The apex court also said that till it decided the matter, a committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge would be in charge of the Bangalore Iskcon temple administration.

You will find full description on the web site. One of Srila Prabhupada’s most cherished desires was to establish the New Vrindaban Community in America. He spoke at great length about building a replica of Vrindaban India, where there are seven main temples. In 1968, The New Vrindaban Community was founded in West Virginia to fulfill Prabhupada’s dream of an ideal society based on Krishna Consciousness, or love of God. When Prabhupada set down the first guidelines for such a community, the idea seemed out of reach to the small band of devotees struggling through a hard winter on a small, rundown farm. There was no electricity, no running water in their only building, a battered pioneer shack. But when Srila Prabhupada had a vision of “seven temples on the seven hills,” suddenly all obstacles seemed insignificant to his followers. By 1972, the community had expanded from 100 acres to 500 acres.
